Club News

This is where we'll announce the most recent Club News. If you've visited us before and want to know what's happening, take a look here first.

[New!]

April 27, 2011. . . Members of the Seminole High School robotics team receive donations totaling $500 from the Seminole and Pinellas Park Lions clubs and another $300 from a private donor. The money will be used for the team’s trip to the USFIRST Robotics World Championship April 27 to May 1 in St. Louis. From left are Seminole Lions Club president Scott Hoffman, Jim Holder of Raytheon, Jesse Raulings, Tyler Johnson, Travis Jayne, Moshe Weinfeld, Justin Jones, school sponsor Norma Foster and Wade Tribiano, president of the Pinellas Park Lions Club.

SEMINOLE FLORIDA – A group of Seminole High School students have qualified for a trip to a world robotics competition following their first-place finish last month in the USFIRST Robotics Florida State Championships in Daytona Beach.

The school’s Spontaneous Combustion robotics team will compete with “3123,” the group’s version of R2-D2, in the USFIRST Tech Challenge World Championship April 27 to May 1 in St. Louis.

Spontaneous Combustion won out over 29 other teams at the state competition and will be one of 128 at the world meet.

Spontaneous Combustion also won the prestigious FTC Design Award at the state competition, which school sponsor Nancy Winant said is a high accomplishment.

Another Seminole High team, Serious Business, finished third in the state meet.

“The kids have worked hard and work well together,” said Winant. “This year they had tough competition but managed to come out on top.”

Winant said the team is made up primarily of seniors who are college bound and seeking degrees in either programming or engineering.

Making up the Spontaneous Combustion team are Tyler Swinehart, Moshe Weinfeld, Tyler Johnson, Justin Jones, Jesse Rawlings, Michael Koblas Ramirez, Jason Acevedo, Travis Jayne, Matia Payne and Corryn Anderson.

Members of the Serious Business team are Ross Smith, Jacob Carr, Jordan Iuliucci, Mary Morse, Alyssa Costin, Marcella Spinuso, David Wankowski, Matthew Crandall, Travis Jayne, Michael Lai, Tyler Rutherford, Adrian Diaz, Mitch Roth and Siena Scigliuto.

“3123” is a small robot, about 18 inches by 18 inches, which was built from a kit provided by funding from Raytheon. The team developed it with the mentoring support of Raytheon engineers Jim Holder and Alan Rubin who volunteer their time twice a week to guide the students in the right direction.

“Our engineers are very careful not to interfere with the kids’ development of ideas and the way they put it together,” Winant said. “If they see something, they don’t mention it until the project is complete. They just make sure the students have a good solid plan, check them over and let them go.”

At the state meet, robots competed on a small field. Robots were programmed the first 40 seconds to be completely autonomous in a manner to get the most possible points. After that, the competition advanced to a segment where the students controlled the robot. The competition concluded with a 30-second segment at the end, which incorporated a variety of technical rules.

Pinellas Park Lions Club Re-Districting. . . On July 1st 2010 -- Pinellas Park Lions Club as part of Florida Lions re-districting plans is now located in the Florida District known as 35-I.

Pinellas Lions Club establishes the Pinellas Park Lions Foundation, Inc.   On March 6th 2003 the IRS approved the foundation as a 501(c) (3) tax exempt application allowing the Pinellas Park Lions a broader latitude in fund raising and charitable contributions in the community of Pinellas Park.  (Click the Foundation Link for further information)

The Pinellas Park Lions Club contributes financial assistance to the Pinellas Park Boys and Girls Club, thereby assisting families in need through the clubs Summer Scholarship Program, as indicated by the quote from Mr. Mark Drysdale the clubs Unit Director.

"The Summer Scholarship Fund allows us to make our Summer Day Camp programs accessible

to even the most needy families. The Summer Day Camp program takes advantage of as many free,

or nearly free, recreational and leisure opportunities it can access and by doing so we manage to

keep program fees to only $200 per child for the entire summer. Even though this fee is extremely

low for full time participation, it is a fee that is well beyond the means of many of our children and

families. The most disturbing problem is that the families who tend to need our programs and

services the most are the same families who are unable to pay the $200 participation fee. It is

for these families that the Summer Scholarship Fund was created. Funds raised through the Summer

Scholarship Fund are used to subsidize families who are unable to pay all, or a part, of the Summer

Day Camp fee. In this way Boys and Girls Club services can be made available to all children in

the Pinellas Park area, particularly those children from disadvantaged circumstances who need us

 most."
